Product Identification Guide

EAN, size and shade: how to identify the exact beauty product

Why a product name alone is often not enough, and which details reduce errors across fragrance, skincare, makeup and personal care orders.

01

EAN is a strong reference, not the only reference

An EAN barcode often distinguishes a specific retail unit, but the code should still be checked against the product name and specification. Packaging changes and regional versions can create exceptions.

When an EAN is available, include it together with the written product description rather than using the code alone.

02

Fragrance: concentration and size matter

EDT, EDP, parfum, tester, travel size and gift set may share similar names while representing different products. State the concentration, volume and set contents.

  • EDT or EDP
  • 30 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml or another size
  • Single item, tester or gift set
  • Women's, men's or unisex version when relevant
03

Makeup: shade is part of the product identity

A foundation, lipstick or concealer line can contain many shades with separate EAN barcodes. The shade number or shade name should be treated as a required field, not an optional note.

  • Shade number
  • Shade name
  • Finish or formula
  • Refill or complete product
04

Skincare and personal care: confirm size and pack format

Similar skincare names may refer to a bottle, refill, set, travel size or market-specific pack. Hair and body products may also differ by pump, pouch, twin pack or carton configuration.

  • Net content
  • Single unit or multipack
  • Bottle, refill or set
  • Regional or language version when required
